Our Medical Nutritional Manager, Kirsty Donald, recently spent two half days volunteering at a charity in Manchester, The Bread and Butter Thing.
The Bread and Butter Thing redistributes surplus food from supermarkets and factories (that may otherwise go to waste) into affordable weekly shops for those suffering hardship. Kirsty spent time at their main warehouse helping to sort food and pack up the vans which go out to several local hubs. The food packs typically contain fresh fruit and veg, chilled items and cupboard staples, and look to promote healthy diets as well as reduce food waste. Some days they are also able to include household essentials such as cleaning products, toilet roll and even pet food.
Kirsty said: "I was absolutely stunned by how much they [The Bread and Butter Thing] were redistributing and couldn’t believe that most of this would have been wasted otherwise! The small team, who are heavily reliant on volunteers, work so hard in all weather to make sure that people in need always have these valuable supplies. It was a great experience."
AYMES was pleased to support Kirsty in this initiative through its "Give Back Days" campaign. Each year, 5% of profits are used in Give Back Days, which provide around 840 hours every year in hours for charities and community groups.
