Sarcopenia

Malnutrition accelerates skeletal muscle loss and functional decline. Sarcopenia is associated with a reduced anabolic response and muscle protein synthesis which often goes along with insufficient nutritional intake² and an increased protein intake is recommended in individuals over 65 years to maintain and regain lean body mass and function.³

Oncology

Malnutrition is a common feature and the consequence of both the presence of a tumour and the medical/surgical treatments. ESPEN guidelines for cancer recommend increased protein intake for people with cancer are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition including the use of ONS.⁴

Hip Fractures

ESPEN guidelines on enteral nutrition in geriatrics recommend the use of oral nutritional supplementation in the elderly after hip fracture surgery to reduce complications.⁵ Botella-Carretero et al (2010)⁶ demonstrated that the use of a high-protein oral nutritional supplement given twice daily was associated with less postoperative complications.
