AYMES proudly sponsored MyNutriWeb's NutriTalks event at The Royal Society in London on 21 October 2025, which brought together leading healthcare experts to explore the ethical and financial impact of malnutrition on the NHS.

A live poll, during the event revealed that 77% of attendees believe nutrition is given low or very low importance within the NHS, despite recognising it as a fundamental part of healthcare delivery. This underlines the urgent need to address malnutrition and develop innovative solutions to improve patient outcomes.

At AYMES, we are passionate about supporting the NHS with effective oral nutritional supplements that enhance patient care while delivering measurable cost savings.

Joined by experts from the fields of dietetics, food service and food provision, healthcare, policy development, procurement and beyond, attendees explored the key challenges and opportunities within hospital nutrition.

Conversations throughout the day explored important questions such as:

  • How can hospital food provision be improved?
  • Who is, and should be, accountable for nutritional care within the NHS?
  • What examples of great practice can be shared from across the country?
  • What role can healthcare professionals, policymakers and senior leaders play in driving real change?

Key Insights from the NutriTalks event:

The high cost of malnutrition

With malnutrition costing over £23 billion annually, malnutrition significantly impacts both patient recovery and NHS resources. Speakers highlighted how early intervention and proper nutritional support can save lives and reduce costs.

Nutrition as a foundational element

The discussion emphasised that nutrition should be integrated as a core component of the NHS, supported by strong systems, education, and policies. Dietitians should play a pivotal role in transforming hospital menus, offering healthier, more plant-based options that benefit patients’ recovery, long-term health, and the environment.

Opportunities for digital innovation

Experts showcased the potential of digital tools to revolutionise nutritional care, from early screening to long-term community management, ensuring patients receive continuous, high-quality support throughout their healthcare journey.

The NutriTalks event was very well attended and reinforced a clear message: nutrition must be at the heart of healthcare if we are to improve patient safety, wellbeing, and recovery.

AYMES is proud to support initiatives like NutriTalks, which bring people together to share ideas, inspire innovation, and advance nutritional care. We remain committed to empowering healthcare professionals and improving outcomes for patients across the UK.
