A simple way to boost calories and protein, this easy homemade fortified milkshake supports a food‑first approach for patients, using everyday ingredients such as whole milk, skimmed milk powder, and a flavoured milkshake powder, such as Nesquik. This video recipe has been created in partnership with Nightingale Hammerson's Reach.

Ingredients
- 180ml whole milk
- 2 heaped teaspoons of skimmed milk powder
- 5 heaped teaspoons of milkshake powder of choice (ideally one that is fortified with vitamins and minerals).
Method
1. Add the skimmed milk powder and milkshake powder to a glass.
2. Gradually pour in around the whole milk. Stir until everything is well mixed. You can also use a shaker or a blender if that’s easier.
3. If you prefer a hot drink, you can warm the milk first and then swap out the milkshake powder for hot chocolate or coffee.
